Does Technology Help Or Hurt Us?

Joseph Stutzman asked:

Anyone who has used a computer or a cellular phone has probably experienced the frustration that results when the device fails to work properly. The Pew Internet and American Life Project estimates that nearly 40 percent of computer users have been confronted with a malfunctioning PC; nearly 30 percent have faced a failing cell phone; and more than a quarter of those polled have had problems with smartphones or PDAs. Even when these devices are working well, it seems that we still have trouble using them: nearly half of all computer and cell phone users are unable to set up the devices themselves. This begs the question: does technology help or hurt us?

The effects of technology are not always positive. Studies have linked the excessive use of computers and cellular phones with ADD/ADHD, depression, chronic anxiety, and even autism. These effects are particularly detrimental in children. While technology was established to improve communication, it appears that technology has also increased stress as a result of making constant communication an obsession for many. Addiction to technology can lead to distraction (such as when texting while driving).

Still, is it fair to blame computers and cell phones for these problems? Many people are able to put aside their frustrations with their computer problems and to use the cell phone only when necessary. Do they just have more willpower than the rest of us? There are no clear answers. Only one thing is certain: for better or worse, technology has changed our lives forever.
